Ask ten powerbuilders what their squat is and nine of them will tell you a back squat number. Ask what their front squat is and most will tell you they do not front squat.
That is a gap. The front squat is not a replacement for the back squat and it does not need to be one. It is a separate movement that addresses weaknesses the back squat cannot fix and builds qualities the back squat cannot build. For a powerbuilding audience that wants both strength and size in the right places, the front squat earns a spot in the program.
What the Front Squat Actually Trains
The bar position is the whole point. With the bar resting on the front of the shoulders, the load sits in front of the center of mass. To keep the bar over mid-foot (where any squat has to balance) the torso has to stay vertical throughout the lift.
That vertical torso position changes everything about how the squat loads the body.
The quads become the primary driver. A back squat with the bar low on the back allows a more hip-dominant pattern, where the torso inclines forward and the posterior chain does significant work. A front squat does not allow that inclination. The lift has to be driven by knee extension, which means quads.
The upper back has to stay locked. If the upper back rounds even slightly, the bar rolls forward off the shoulders. This forces active engagement of the thoracic erectors, rhomboids, and upper traps throughout the lift. Your upper back is working the whole time, not just bracing.
The core has to handle an anterior load. Bracing against a weight sitting in front of the torso is mechanically different from bracing against a weight sitting on the back. The anterior core, especially the rectus abdominis and obliques, takes on a bigger share of the work.
Why It Matters for Powerbuilders
The powerbuilding audience cares about both the number on the bar and the way the body looks. Front squats contribute to both in ways the back squat alone does not.
For size: quad development in a back squat is load-dependent and pattern-dependent. Lifters who habitually back squat with a hip-dominant pattern often end up with underdeveloped quads relative to glutes and hamstrings. Front squats force direct quad loading every rep. Over time, the quad sweep shows up in a way that back squats alone rarely produce.
For strength: the front squat exposes upper back weaknesses that limit back squat performance without the lifter realizing it. Lifters who cannot hold a rigid upper back under a heavy front squat often have the same weakness caving their chest at the bottom of a heavy back squat. Training the front squat fixes the upper back weakness directly, and the back squat benefits.
For positions: the front squat trains the exact torso position that lifters need in competition squats, cleans, and any loaded movement that demands an upright trunk. That carryover is automatic once the movement is trained consistently.
Why Most Lifters Skip It
Three reasons, in order of how often they come up.
First, the rack position is uncomfortable. Until the wrists, shoulders, and upper back adapt, holding the bar on the shoulders feels awkward. Many lifters try it once, hate it, and go back to back squats.
Second, the weights are smaller. A lifter who back squats 400 might front squat 280. Some lifters dislike working with lower numbers, even when those lower numbers are still hard work.
Third, the mobility requirement. Lifters with tight wrists, elbows, lats, or thoracic spine struggle to get into a solid rack. That discomfort gets used as a reason not to program the movement.
None of these are good reasons. They are reasons the front squat is undertrained, which is exactly why adding it produces gains for most lifters.
How to Get the Rack Right
Two main rack positions work. The clean rack uses a full grip on the bar with elbows driven high and the bar resting on the meat of the shoulders. The cross-grip rack crosses the arms over the bar in an X, holding the bar in place against the shoulders.
The clean rack is preferred for most lifters because it transfers to Olympic lifting and produces a more secure bar position under heavy loads. The cross-grip works for lifters with severe wrist or elbow limitations but tends to be less stable at heavy weights.

Mobility work that actually moves the needle: wrist extensions, lat stretches (lats limit the front rack more than most lifters realize), and thoracic extension drills. Fifteen minutes two or three times a week, done consistently, cleans up most rack issues within a few months.
How to Program Front Squats
Front squats do not need to replace back squats. They work best as a second squat pattern in the week.
A common structure: one heavy back squat day for maximal strength, one front squat day for quad development and upper back work, programmed at moderate intensity and moderate rep ranges.
Typical prescriptions:
- 3 to 4 sets of 5 to 8 reps at 70 to 80 percent of front squat max
- Or 4 to 5 sets of 3 to 5 reps at 80 to 85 percent during strength-focused blocks
- Pause front squats with a 1 to 2 second hold at the bottom are brutal and highly effective for quad strength and upright position
Frequency of once per week is usually enough. Twice per week is fine for lifters who tolerate volume well, but the back squat should remain the primary strength driver for most programs.
What to Actually Do
- Add front squats once per week as a secondary squat pattern. Do not drop back squats to make room. Pair them.
- Train the clean rack if you can. Use wrist wraps to keep the wrist stable under load.
- Work rack-position mobility two or three times a week. Wrists, lats, thoracic spine.
- Accept lower numbers than back squat. The training effect is different. The scoreboard is not what matters.
- Program for 8 to 12 weeks before evaluating carryover. Front squat adaptations show up in quad size and back squat upper-back strength after a meaningful block, not after two sessions.
The front squat is not optional for a complete powerbuilding program. It trains the upright torso, the quads, and the upper back in ways the back squat cannot touch. Add it, run it honestly, and watch the back squat benefit as a side effect.
